Revealing Our Indestructible Beingness,
The Safe Context Of Mind, Body And World
For A Healthy Balanced Life.

What Is Context Awakening?

If we accept that the fundamental goal of all activity is to achieve a state of completion, also called wholeness and sometimes happiness, then this is the agreed starting point for our discussion. The human mind is always searching for this. This speaks to our mind’s deep need to locate itself within a broader, meaningful context, one that offers understanding, completeness and psychological safety. The concept of context blindness derives originally from autism research (notably by Peter Vermeulen, Autism as Context Blindness, 2012) and is referenced in the Human Givens approach. While context blindness typically refers to the physical brain’s difficulty in reading rational, emotional and imaginative context, here we offer an expanded definition: a disconnection from the context of our very being that is the heart of all experiences.

It appears that life consists of the context of transient experiences, such as thoughts and sensations, witnessed by us, the experiencing that is the witnessing context of these experiences. As we dive deep into the experience of being the experiencing context, or the experience of the context of temporary experiences, we find the same underlying reality. So, paradoxically, we are neither the witness nor the forms that are witnessed, but both. We cannot know or define what this reality is, only that it is. As we reveal that this beingness is everything and we are that, then our innate wholeness and completeness is recognised. There is not here or there, me or you, or inside and outside. There is simply this beingness, which is everything appearing as a multitude of forms recognised by our mind as various objects.

As this beingness is clearly seen, then psychological suffering that arises from the perception that we are the context of the limited mind and body naturally and gradually ceases. Free of seeking happiness and wholeness in the context of transient experiences, the innate needs of our mind and body can be expressed in a naturally balanced manner. These needs arise and are met through the innate intelligence of the mind and body to organise them in a conscious and semi-unconscious manner. Thoughts occur, emotions move the body towards the nourishment of needs, needs are satisfied, and emotional energy naturally dissipates.

The body-mind will be physiologically comfortable or not, depending on the establishment of its needs. The body-mind will be psychologically comfortable or not, depending on whether we are living from the sense of being a separate person or not. So this opens two dimensions of context awakening. The “vertical” awakening to the context of our being. The “horizontal” awakening to the context of our human needs. If we are blind to our being and/or these needs, then there could be a tendency to bypass the needs of the body, or feel disconnected from our natural peace and wholeness.

Self-identification with the mind and body — Context blind to aware beingness

Firstly, there is self-identification with the mind and body, which are perceived to be separate from their environment. In this case, we are blind to the context of our aware being. This means that the achievement of need will be the defining factor of wellbeing, and happiness and wholeness will be equated with mental and bodily comfort, because the mind and body are in a perennial state of unsatiable need. It will be deemed that achieving these needs is a matter of personal, egoic volition and control, and there will be strong attachment to outcome. This attachment creates the tendency for an imbalance of human need at any point in time, and an endless seeking for more of these experiences.

In this case, the source of happiness and wholeness will be constantly searched for in the gross, sensational, physical, material and relational context. Possibly also in the subtle, energetic, intellectual and cultural context. Possibly also in the abstract context of meaningful understanding, which will be limited to mental and physically bound definitions of this, including bodily strength, romantic love, family and social groups, intellectualism, ideologies and belief systems.

We see widespread evidence in society of many people who view these aspects as the primary source of wholeness and psychological safety because of identifying with their mind and body.

Non-identification with the mind and body — Context awakened to aware beingness

Secondly, there is identification as the aware beingness that cannot be known or defined by the mind and body in objective terms, nor claimed to be dependent on the mind and body, and therefore personal.

This means that we have found innate wholeness and completeness as the ever-present, never-changing reality of our beingness, irrespective of the physical circumstances of the mind and body. In this case, we are awakened to the context of our aware being. With the search for wholeness now over, the needs of the body and mind still arise, but do so in the context of innate wholeness. They are organised free of the sense that our happiness depends on them, and with the understanding that they arise and are satisfied free of any personal control. This detached attitude allows for a natural balancing of human need at any point in time.

In this case, free of fearful attachment and cognitively distorted thinking, there is a greater sensitivity to the comfort of the mind and body and their sensational, physical, material and relational aspects. Also, to the subtle energetic, intellectual and cultural aspects. Furthermore, the abstract context of meaningful understanding goes beyond limited mental and physically bound definitions, to be recognised as the context of pure impersonal aware beingness itself, and not rooted in belief, thought or ideologies. This case presumes that the intelligence of the mind functions to authentically meet its human needs, and that an integral part of this is the informational map of human needs it maintains through psychoeducation about them.

Conclusion — Context Awakening to Beingness, Mind and Body

The optimal human life is achieved through a combination of context awakening to the innate wholeness of aware beingness and intelligent psycho-awareness of human needs.

The Case of Engrained Mental Context Blindness to Bypassing Needs

The bypassing of mental and physical needs, and consequent health, through the wholeness of context awakening to aware beingness. Where there is a tendency towards egoic control based on context blindness to beingness, this will also have created the habit of suppression, avoidance and dysregulation by the mind. In other words, the mind has also become context blind to the authentic expression of its own needs and those of the body. This can be so chronic that the mind may subtly use the peaceful wholeness arising from context awakening to beingness to consistently ignore or bypass the health of the mind and body, which are the vehicle of aware beingness. The long-term, consistent bypassing of human need is unhealthy for the mind and body, and is antithetical to the wisdom, love and beauty of aware beingness.

The Case of Neurological Context Blindness

Context blindness, as outlined by Joe Griffin in the Human Givens approach, refers to a cognitive difficulty in automatically interpreting the broader or subtle context in which information, emotions or experiences occur. In individuals with autism, this may manifest as a reduced ability to intuitively grasp social cues, emotional nuance or imaginative perspective, often due to underactivity in the default mode network (DMN), the brain system associated with internal reflection, empathy and the construction of meaning. Griffin also relates context blindness to certain psychotic experiences, where the mind generates interpretations or beliefs detached from shared reality, again due to impaired contextual processing. In both cases, the inability to reference wider emotional, relational or situational context can lead to distress, disconnection or misinterpretation of reality.

Addressing this form of blindness involves reawakening awareness to both external and internal context, including needs, bodily signals and emotional meaning, supporting a return to coherence, psychological safety and grounded perception. This understanding also breeds inclusivity of the human experience, in that although these two extremes of neurological context blindness are designated as autism and psychosis, all human brains exist on this spectrum, and awareness of the tendencies arising from this is an important factor in understanding how to live.

Understanding neurological context blindness helps us to recognise and respect the natural variation in how different minds process experience. This awareness has several important implications.

Some minds are more rational, others more imaginative. Neurological diversity includes a spectrum of cognitive orientation. Some people process reality primarily through linear, logical or detail-focused thinking, while others engage more through symbolic, imaginative or associative patterns. Neither is better — both have strengths and vulnerabilities depending on context. Recognising this helps to avoid pathologising difference and encourages personalised approaches to communication, learning and support.

Some minds are more or less connected to psycho-biological context. While some individuals are naturally attuned to bodily sensations, emotional cues and internal needs, others may experience a disconnection from their inner context — such as hunger, tiredness, emotional shifts or relational needs. This is especially common in certain neurodivergent presentations, such as autism, ADHD or psychosis, but also appears in trauma responses and states of high stress. Restoring this connection can be key to wellbeing, emotional regulation and grounded decision-making.

The gift of neurological context blindness is that it may open the door to context awakening. For some individuals, the same neurological patterns that limit access to conventional cognitive or emotional context may leave them more available to direct awareness, to beingness itself. In the absence of strong conceptual filters or habitual identifications, these minds may have easier access to non-dual insight, unconditioned presence or felt reality. Recognising this not only reframes neurodiversity as containing potential spiritual or perceptual gifts, but also invites a new kind of support — one that nurtures awakening rather than conformity.
