  • The Body is the Child — honest, sensitive, and direct, expressing its truth through sensation and emotion, often overwhelmed by the adolescent mind.

  • You are the Loving Parent — ever-present aware beingness, calm and spacious, the true source of stability and wisdom. You do not react; you witness, include, and guide with compassion.

The Three Modes of Being

Using the Universal Family metaphor, we can observe how our inner system moves through three fundamental modes of being. These are not fixed states, but fluid orientations, each with its own physiological, psychological, and existential markers.

Child Mode

  • Dominated by: fear, overwhelm, and survival responses

  • Signs include: emotional flooding, hyperarousal, shutdown

  • Neuroscientific view: limbic and brainstem activity (fight/flight/freeze)

  • Non-dual lens: identity contracts into sensation; the body is mistaken for the whole self

We are no longer with our sensations — we are inside them.

Adolescent Mode

  • Dominated by: the narrative mind — comparison, judgement, inner conflict

  • Signs include: anxious thought loops, limiting beliefs, self-consciousness

  • Neuroscientific view: heightened activity in the Default Mode Network (DMN)

  • Non-dual lens: the mind overlays meaning onto experience, obscuring presence

The adolescent believes it must fix, prove, or complete itself — often by seeking control, approval, or identity.

Adult Mode

  • Dominated by: presence, clarity, compassion

  • Signs include: inner spaciousness, non-reactivity, calm inclusion

  • Neuroscientific view: integrated brain states, vagal tone, open awareness

  • Non-dual lens: abiding as the field of awareness — not part of experience, but its context

From this ground, the child and adolescent are not repressed or fixed, but lovingly met and integrated.

Through the metaphor of the Universal Family, we will explore the three inner modes of being — the Body (Child), the Mind (Adolescent), and Beingness (Adult or Parent). Rather than offering fixed techniques, the day gently invites a direct encounter with your own wholeness — not as a theory, but as a living, felt reality.
